Joan vs. the Volcano

June 27th, 2008

At the volcanoThere are some things that, once you have done them, you know you will never do them again–like the time I white-water rafted the Colorado with Nancy and almost died (I thought). Well, last night I climbed a volcano with my kids and saw molten lava and rocks being spewed into the night sky like Pele being told by her hygienist, “OK, now, spit,” and that made all the difference.100_4013.JPG

Uncle Si

June 21st, 2008

My Uncle Si died today. He was 91. I am in Hawaii visiting Ian and will be unable to attend the visitation or funeral. Mom and I were just talking about Uncle Si last week–how he named his plane after her ( he was a pilot in the European theatre during WWII), how he always seemed to get the other brothers out of trouble, how he let his buddies know how to treat his kid sister. When we were growing up, we liked visiting Uncle Si and Aunt Dolores because we loved our cousins, but also because they were just so friendly–pleasant and fun to be around. He always promised he’d come down on one of these first Saturdays he had off. Well, you’ve got them all off now, Uncle Si. God Bless You. We’ll miss you.

KK has landed in Atlanta and is waiting for her flight to Louisville. It’s been delayed 40 minutes, but she should arrive around 8 p.m. Her blade has made it as far as Atlanta, too.
